Morneau in the Home Run Derby?

What do you guys think about the possibility of him doing it?  I would love to see him in it, because I don't see how it messes up your swing to take big hacks for one night.  However I don't understand why the MLB would invite somebody who's on pace for 24 HRs this year.

I'd rather he didn't participate because the home run derby is boring.

I read in the USA today that he would do it if asked, but that he thought it messed up his swing last year.  I hope he does it, I think it's a fun night.

He did it last year and his HR production went down.

That said, Morneau has only hit 12 hrs so far, maybe a Home Run Derby will help his homerun swing this time.

I don't want to see Morneau OR Ryan Braun in the Home Run Derby, but I'll bet they get coerced into it.  They only have 5 guys so far who have agreed to participate.

I think about 15 minutes of the Home Run Derby is interesting, but then it's like watching paint dry.  And Chris Berman's back, back, back stuff is awful.

If they are going to have a skills contest, I wish they'd have a 5-Tools Competition to see who is the best all around player.

I kind of thought this too except he's been pretty clutch and has hit for a little power and good average so I don't know. I think it's all a mental thing (the derby jinx) but Justin is one of the most superstitious players out there.

ESPN was saying during the game last night and I agree.  The reason Morneau's homer's are down is because he doesn't have protection behide him in the lineup and he is content with just hitting to the left and just get the RBI.

Morneau in the Home Run Derby would be great.  Gives more attention to him as a player and the Twins as a team.  One day of swinging for bombs does not ruin the rest of the year.

Why did he crush the ball the first two weeks after the All-Star break last year then?

I just did some checking, Morneau had 24 HR's before the All-Star Break. He did hit 4 HR's in the 14 games after the All-Star break ( July 12-28),  and he only had 3 HR's the rest of the way.

I don't think the HR Derby hurt him because like lolololol said, JM was hitting HR's right after the HR Derby.

Three HR's in his last 52 games is a bit puzzling though.

Re: Morneau in the Home Run Derby?

If Morneau participates in the home run hitting contest... and he wins it ..... he owes his entire pitching staff an apology for laying an egg with 12 bombs at this point and winning a meaningless contest.

Kubel has 12 for crying out loud....

I sent a hitting critique to former GM Ryan about Morneau's propensity to cheat to the right side allowing the pitcher to be successful on him on the outside part of the dish.  It was forwarded to Vavra and I was emailed back by Vavra.

It was a very labor intensive critique where I outlined visually how his momentum clearly shifts and he loses much of his power.  Instead of landing soft and firing toward the pitcher, he moves toward the second base side and his power is generated against the inside pitch but lost against the outside pitch and outside change.

I will not bore you with the details of his response to me but it was like ...yeah whatever, we got it.

Teams have no problem giving up base knocks to Morneau and even a double because there is no threat behind Morneau so they can pitch around him and not give up the gopher ball.

Morneau needs to work on his balance and we have to get him better protection from a number 5 man.

12 HR's for Morneau by the All-Star Break is not good enough.
