Wake up!!!!!!!T-wolves haters!!!!!
2006-07 Timberwolves Finished 32-50
Roster Starters Garnett Ricky davis Blount Mike James Trenton Hassell Bench Jaric Hudson
Mchale is at fault for having all these bad contracts on the same roster, but in the course of a year and half to get from this roster...and many contracts which were almost untradeable, to where we are today is an outstanding job, period!!! Starting with the garnett trade which got us out of his black hole contract and landed us jefferson whose solid and 8-9 years younger + took less than max extention from the wolves......he said quote " i'm not good enough for that......yet" refreshing from a young nba star on the rise..... compare that to garnett who bent the wolves over when they already had offered him the richest extention in nba history over 100 mil, and he said no till it went up to what 126 mil. then came out in his press confrence and said it wasnt about the 'loot', whatever!!\
Getting miami to take blount and davis for anything was a good trade, and they gave up a first round pick to us...huh?
Getting rid of James, hassell, hudson, jaric ......
This team is young, promising, and has cap room in the years to come. Also, the wolves have multiable #1 picks in the next few years....thats something new....
Bottom line, this team is in the best condition it been in ,maybe ever!!! Mchale has sucked the life out of this franchise for a long time, but he deserves some credit for turning that roster from 06-07 to where they are today......How can you wolves haters deny this?

Re: Wake up!!!!!!!T-wolves haters!!!!!
I don't deny at all that Kevin McHale is directly responsible for last year's 22 win season.
Look, I don't hate the Wolves. I don't. I agree that there is some nice young talent on this team. I agree that their contract situation is a lot better now than it has been in a long time. I think with proper management, this team could take some significant steps forward in the intermediate future.
But that's the rub, "with proper management." Let us not forget this is the same management that brought us Roy/Foye, Ndudi Ibi, Joe Smith, Cassell and a 1st for Jaric, and this latest trade (which, I suppose is still debateable), among others.
I'll ask you; how can you have any faith that Kevin McHale will guide this team to the promised land?

Re: Wake up!!!!!!!T-wolves haters!!!!!
I guess now I feel better, you mean he finally traded away a team that he put together? Wow, we're finally on our way! You know, now it's easier to forget the fact that he couldn't get this team to the Finals with an elite big man, and is showing little interest in getting star quality players. Your right, there is nothing about this team that is frustrating at all.
I'm with Beefcake, there is some nice young talent on this team, but there is no reason to believe Mchale will ever get us a championship, so until he is gone, I am going to be an extremely skeptical fan(which means to appear a hater to you).

Re: Wake up!!!!!!!T-wolves haters!!!!!
Is it possible for homers to glorify Jefferson without denigrating KG?
Seriously, I like Jefferson but Boston just won an NBA championship while paying three superstars big money (KG, Pierce, Allen). McHale could have built around KG, no matter how much he made, if he hadn't committed so many blunders. I mean, Danny Ainge, who was regarded as one of the worst GM's in the league before the summer of 2007, showed this past year how easy it is to win with him.
"We picked him [Mayo] for us. This means we're keeping him."

I'm not saying i do.....i did say he was at fault for those bad contracts. this team was dead in the water with that roster and im just saying Mchale has made a nice comeback in the last year in my opinion. Some rubes are gonna hate on everything i get it!! I'm just gonna be objective and give him some credit. that being said..if he resigned tommorrow it would be good with me.

Correct. I'd be much more optimistic if this rebuilding was being done by a differnet group. The reason we had to trade KG is because the f'd it up so badly with him they had to blow it up. Even if they've done some good things since then (and they have) it pales in comparison to squadering a talent like KG. Any competent owner would have fired McHale and hired asomeone else to do the rebuilding. I'd be much more positive about the team if someone else was doing this even if the new person had made the exact same moves. In a complete vacuum, some of McHales recent moves have been good, most notably the Davis to Miami trade. But so what? The guy has dug a hole so deep that he's just taken the first little mini-steps toward getting out of it. I'd much rather abandon this oaf and get a new architect.

Yeah, there's more potential here now than there was 2 years ago, that's definately true. But as a fan, I have very little faith that we have the guy at the helm who can steer the good ship "Potential" into clearer waters. Change has to start at the top and sh*t flows downhill.

This is one of the episodes that is conveniently forgotten by people who feel Garnett was martyred in Minnesota to the altar of McHale. This came about the year after Shaq had left the Magic with nothing but memories and what might have been by going to the Lakers, and the Wolves then made the decision that they would do whatever it took to keep KG happy. So KG (through his agent), wisely held them hostage. The contract was step 1, next came signing Joe Smith (the 2nd KG buddy who they took on after Marbury), and out of desparation doing it under the table. The dye was cast, and they continued the KG flunky parade, resigning guys who weren't worthy (Hassell, James, Hudson) because KG wanted them there. McHale had his own issues of course that weren't KG related (the two biggest which were the Billups move and of course going for Marko). All GM's make bad moves (Martell Webster for the choice of CP3 or Deron Williams, anyone?), but they are never as bad or as good as they are portrayed by fans. McHale took this team to 8 straight playoff appearances after nothing but failure as the Siberia of the NBA. Is Geoff Petrie a bad GM because his team is no longer very good after being about the equal of the Wolves at about the same time? There is an ebb and flow to every franchise that is not located in LA or Phx. You have to be very lucky or very good as a GM to never experience the lower rungs in the NBA. McHale is neither.

Re: Wake up!!!!!!!T-wolves haters!!!!!
people need to seriously stop using kg's contract as an excuse for mchale''s failure to surround him with a good supporting cast. as i have said before, he was able to bring in cassell and spreewell while kg had a big contract, so i'm pretty sure he had the money to bring guys in to help kg the whole time kg had that contract. he just happened to use it on average to below average players on a regular basis.
on a side note, it's' okay to say you're excited about the upcoming season without bashing kg. i would suggest you do it that way next time because otherwise you end up saying something stupid like blaming kg for mchale sucking.

Also you could have put the whole Boston roster on the wolves last year and they may not have won the championship..coming out of the west. rubes think in a vacuum i guess....

Listen, all the teams that win sign their players to these huge contracts and still get enough talent around them to win. Stop using the contract as an excuse. Mchale is one of the 2 worst GM's in all of sports, that's the way it is.

Interesting post. I certainly agree that the Wolves and McHale haven't been lucky either. I'm a big Bulls fan, and in the post-Jordan era, the Bulls have selected 1st twice, 2nd twice, 3, 4th twice, 7th twice, and 9th once. That is better luck than all the non-lotto years of the Timberwolves going back to the team's inception. As far as the KG contract goes, he was worth every penny. A big contract is not an excuse to not win a title. It might make it a little more challenging sometimes, but it can be, and often is, done. Then there are the guys like Joe Smith, Troy Hudson, etc. that KG wanted around. I don't deny that Garnett wanted these guys to play with, but a good GM doesn't care. The Bulls traded away one of Michael Jordan's favorite players in Charles Oakley for Bill Cartwright in the late 80's. The did it because they knew it was right for the team and the quest to win the title. Jordan was not happy, but when Cartwright's defense helped Jordan win titles in the early 90's, I think MJ was okay with it. That's what a good GM does. They get the players to help the team win, not the players how are the star's friends. Jerry Kraus was a good GM. Kevin McHale is a bad GM. That is the point. You are the boss. Stand up for what the team needs. That is your job. Yes there are other bad GMs in the league. It has never been a concern of mine if McHale is the worst GM in the world or just a bad one. The fact that he is a bad one is enough. He should be fired and replaced by a competent general manager. Preferably one from outside the organization.

Really? Now it's KG's fault that the team sucked? That's fantastic. The guy averaged 20/10/5 for a number of years here. It's his fault. Don't blame the organization for blowing nearly every trade, draft pick, and FA decision while he was here. It was McHale's job to surround KG with guys that can help him win, not to surround him with his friends. He failed to do that for all but one season. KG did his job. McHale failed at his.

This is a valid point, but a guy like Pierce had been on the block for some time, Ainge often talked of building around the young nucleus. So what I'm saying is, maybe they wouldn't have won it last year, but if Mchale would have done what Ainge did, my guess is that if you give that squad 2-3 years, they would have won it atleast once. Mchale never did that outside of the one time with Cassell and Spree. Even then though, he screwed it up in the end by trading for Jaric and digging another hole. Nobody will fault him for not giving in to Spree's demands.

Re: Wake up!!!!!!!T-wolves haters!!!!!
Dummyte Cookerpecker:Is it possible for homers to glorify Jefferson without denigrating KG?
Seriously, I like Jefferson but Boston just won an NBA championship while paying three superstars big money (KG, Pierce, Allen). McHale could have built around KG, no matter how much he made, if he hadn't committed so many blunders. I mean, Danny Ainge, who was regarded as one of the worst GM's in the league before the summer of 2007, showed this past year how easy it is to win with him.
McHale did the exact same thing that Ainge did in '04 with Spree and Sam, only he didn't get the benefit of having them both healthy through the entire playoffs. Answer this, if Pierce really had been injured in game one of the finals, so that he was unable to play (ie. Sam in '04 for the WCF), would the Celtics have been able to finish the deal? Or, if say Bynum (the interior force that was seriously lacking) had been able to play for the Lakers, would the results have been the same? There is a lot of luck involved in this too, and the Celtics benefitted from that when the Wolves were unable to.

hannible: DumbnDumber:
The Who: hannible:2006-07 Timberwolves Finished 32-50
OMG, KG and his agent wanted fair market value, how could they???
Listen, all the teams that win sign their players to these huge contracts and still get enough talent around them to win. Stop using the contract as an excuse. Mchale is one of the 2 worst GM's in all of sports, that's the way it is.
BWAHAHAHA.............screen name secure!!!
How so? If your going to make a claim like this, you better back it up. So your saying Mchale isn't bad at his job? This would fly in the face of pretty much every intelligent basketball mind out there. He is blamed by pretty much everyone for wasting KG all of these years.
Are you saying KG's contract is so unique that no other team has worked around it? That would be funny cuz Boston just won a championship by surrounding KG with 2 players that have monster contracts. LA made it to the Finals with Kobe's contract. The Spurs have two huge contracts.
Do you need me to go on?
So again, what's your point?

He did the same thing Ainge did, only to abandon that plan after two years, despite the success it brought this franchise. McHale was stuck between contending and rebuilding, never able to commit to one. Ainge fully committed to contending by giving up his best assets (Jefferson to MN, 1st round pick to Seattle). McHale had an opportunity to land several All-Stars the last couple years (Iverson, Davis, Vince Carter was given away for nothing, etc.). Except, McHale was reluctant to deal Foye for Iverson, the Wolves were reluctant to give up Sprewell's huge expiring for Baron Davis, etc. The Cassell injury sucked but you have to deal with things, not make excuses. If I remember correctly, the Wolves did almost nothing the following offseason to build upon '03-04. They signed a troubled Eddie Griffin and hoped for the best but that was it. I don't see how Boston got "lucky" at all. Again, injuries are a part of the game. Obviously LA was a pretty good team, even without Bynum to make it to the NBA finals. It's not like they lost Bynum in the series. They lost him with several months left to go in the season.
"We picked him [Mayo] for us. This means we're keeping him." - Fred "Two-faced" Hoiberg just hours before trading Mayo to Memphis.

Re: Wake up!!!!!!!T-wolves haters!!!!!
i admit that mchale's done decent this past year, but that still doesnt excuse him from his poor drafting, the joe smith fiasco, firing flip, hiring wittman, lack of good moves.
blame kg's contract all you want, in the nba u can still get good players regardlees of how much money is tied to one player. we brought in sam and spree one year and almost got AI who was making $21 million. why couldnt he come close or bring in more talent more often? easy, mchale's an idiot. everyone should know that. vince taylor was telling me how mchale's made some bad decisions, and he actually thinks mchale's a great guy.
boston was able to bring in allen and kg to help pierce and the lakers brought in gasol.
