Ineligible Players?? Or is Sid just being senile again?

Read this in the strib "The big question about the Gophers football team's highly ranked recruiting class is how many of the players haven't passed their entrance tests or don't have the credits to gain admission to the university. The scholarships given to recruits include money for enrolling in summer school. Some people, who should be in the know, report that coach Tim Brewster is not happy with some of the decisions that the school's admissions office could make. More than a couple of the top recruits might not be admitted." Per Sid Hartman

It seems very vague to me? Is sid just blowing smoke? Or do you think there is a legitmate shot that we could lose some of our upper tier recruits?  Thoughts..?

For the first time in 3 years, I think Sid knows what he's talking about.

This would be AWESOME.  It will get even better when Punky starts having people take tests for his players.  Clem will be long forgotten after Punky runs the program into Sanction Hell.

HFG...*yawn* You can do better than that.

To the OP...there is probably some truth to those rumors.  It was no secret to anyone that some of the athletes Brewster was recruiting last year were academic risks.  MN wouldn't be the only team that fails to have a couple players qualify.  It happened frequently under Mason too.  Abdul-Khaliq, Ernie Wheelwright and Thomas Tapeh are 3 that immediately come to mind as players who failed to qualify out of high school and had to wait a season.

I've already done better than that by predicting many of these punks would be ineligible.

At this point, there isn't much truth to this rumor so far.  There's a list over at GopherHole with the players who are currently enrolled (including "academic risks" Green and Gray), and who's left.  Sid does this every year as a part of his "The U is at a disadvantage because it has tougher admission standards than the rest of the Big Ten" bullplop.  Will everyone from this class get in?  Hopefully, but I doubt it.   Even St. Glen couldn't get all his choirboys into school

Re: Ineligible Players?? Or is Sid just being senile again?

There will be 3 players that do not qualify or take a gray shirt. Per NCAA rules you can only take on a maximum of 25 scholarship football players per year. 3 of the January enrollees can count towards 2007 signees. So ultimately we can bring in a maximum of 28 players this year. And anybody that has followed is aware that 3 players that signed on NLOI day will not be with the Gopher team come fall, either by not qualifing or taking a gray shirt. Just like what happens to numerous teams every year.

Look for some of the non-qualifiers to be placed at a Prep school or a JUCO.

Re: Ineligible Players?? Or is Sid just being senile again?

Only the following players have yet to be registered at the U:

    Lawrence
    Mckinley
    Mcgee
    Mcknight
    Simmons
    Tinsley

I was told Simmons finished the online class that he needed and had the necessary credits to qualify, not sure why he hasn't been registered as of yet. I'm most concerned with Lawrence and Simmons ending up in maroon and gold. The other players all have their upsides, but those two are the most important of this group. I expect both to be on the team when fall rolls around.

None of the Jucos have been registered yet, besides Sharpe, Pittman, and Brock who are already on the team of course.  They might be waiting on transcrips or something.... but im guessing the two non-qualifiers we need will both be jucos.

Simmons sounded real confident that he will be admitted.  He is the only "heralded' recruit not registered for classes at this point.

Just wondering why you feel the need to call 28 yr old kids 'punks'.  None have records or have given you any reason to call them 'punks' other than the fact that they're going to a school you don't like.  Grow up

Oleboy, I know your post over at Gopher Illustrated....you should stop here alittle more than you do.

There is alot of blind hate around here and people who need to be set straight.

Preciate that.  I don't know why I don't come this way more often.  Well actaully I do.  I get frustrated with internet boards sometimes because people say all types of things they'd never say in person and just spout off at the mouth like Hayden Fry-Cook Boy.  I like the intelligent conversation over on GI and other places, especially since I'm usually posting at work

As of Thursday everyone is enrolled at the U except Simoni Lawrence and Tim McGee.

So Tim McGee is the only one not enrolled?  That cannot be.  HFG himself told me these recruits wouldn't be eligible.

Teenel was way off when he said HFG doesn't do predictions.

Do grayshirts really ever work out? Seems like about 90% of them never end up enrolling...
He was funny in 2005. The US is so far behind on this guy, I moved on to Bruno about a year ago.

If Ryan Grant greyshirts i think he will work out.  Alot of the academic greyshirt never do make it though.
