    Dummyte Cookerpecker:

He did the same thing Ainge did, only to abandon that plan after two years, despite the success it brought this franchise.  McHale was stuck between contending and rebuilding, never able to commit to one.  Ainge fully committed to contending by giving up his best assets (Jefferson to MN, 1st round pick to Seattle).

McHale had an opportunity to land several All-Stars the last couple years (Iverson, Davis, Vince Carter was given away for nothing, etc.).  Except, McHale was reluctant to deal Foye for Iverson, the Wolves were reluctant to give up Sprewell's huge expiring for Baron Davis, etc.  The Cassell injury sucked but you have to deal with things, not make excuses.  If I remember correctly, the Wolves did almost nothing the following offseason to build upon '03-04.  They signed a troubled Eddie Griffin and hoped for the best but that was it.

I don't see how Boston got "lucky" at all.  Again, injuries are a part of the game.  Obviously LA was a pretty good team, even without Bynum to make it to the NBA finals.  It's not like they lost Bynum in the series.  They lost him with several months left to go in the season.

They aborted after year 2, definitely, but didn't they almost have to with the Sam and Spree circus that came in year 2, when they didn't even make the playoffs?  It was a high risk move, and we knew it from the start, that it was a move that would only work for a couple of years.  We sold our soul for a run at the title, but time ran out for them without winning it.  Sam & Spree was the exact same move that Boston took that got them the title, but they picked higher quality locker room guys.  But in a way Boston paid a steeper price for this team than the Wolves did, because they gave up their future (Al, Gomes) for a short term answer (that so far has paid off in spades), and all the Wolves gave up were Joe Smith and an expiring contract.  In a couple of years the Celtics will be back where they were before the trade.

Most of McHale's moves have actually made sense, but somebody brought up the one that to me was the worst one, and that was the Gugliotta free agency.  Now that was a screw up.  He let Googs walk and he signed Joe Smith instead of taking Elden Campbell and Eddie Jones for him because his job was to "make the Timberwolves champions, not the Lakers."  After the fall out on that one, I think some of these other moves are pretty harmless.

Wait a minute, I'm making your case for you.....  I'd better move along.

Sure, I'll agree that McHale has done a decent job turning over the roster that he is 100% responsible for assembling in the first place.  I'll agree that there is some nice young talent on this team.  I'd also like to point out that right now this talent has gotten us to a 22-60 record and the future could still easily not be a lot brighter.  Forgive me if I withhold the accolades from Mr. McHale at this point.  I still judge him by his entire tenure here which has been a massive cloud of failure with a few brief rays of sunshine peeking through.

When he took over in '95 it took him one year to put together a playoff team with basically 2 leftover players from the McCloskey era.  He couldn't finish the job, no arguments there, but to call his tenure a "massive cloud of failure" is just hyperbole.  8 playoff years out of 13 in NBA Siberia, despite being penalized by the NBA of draft picks and a superstar (please note that I am not criticizing KG's game, his effort, or his committment to excellence here) with a contract that made the NBA change the rules for the entire league and in the process counting that salary at the equivalent of 1.5 superstars for our team.  He was operating a team with one hand tied behind his back (yes, some of it of his or Glen Taylor's own making), and he still managed to keep this team competitive for most of that tenure.  He has proven that he can build the foundation of a good team, he just may need someone else to finish out that team.  I think you have to give him credit for that;  it has not been a massive failure.  It has just seemed that way for the past few years.  The exact same thing has happened to Sacramento, Indiana, and Miami, and it appears that Dallas is about to enter that phase as well.  It's ebb and flow.  It will come back around, and once McHale faced the facts that it wasn't going to work with KG, he has gone back into building up mode, and the first signs are encouraging, at the very least, for all the reasons pointed out in the initial post on this thread.  This will turn around quicker than you might think, it's just hard going through the low points, especially when we were so close and everything fell apart so quickly.

    BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Now why did the NBA strip the wolves of draft picks?  Who was the guy who broke the rules and put us in that place?

Yeah, we made the playoffs 8 of 13 years, but this is the NBA, not baseball or football.  More than 50% of the teams make the post-season.  You've got to win post-season series to be anything.  We only did that one year.

Maimi won a title.  Dallas got there.  Sacramento and Indiana both had long stretches of good play with deep playoff runs.  If we had done that, I'd be happy with McHale.  Face it, there was only one season this team was a realistic contender.  Other teams have their runs and rebuild.  That's fine.  That is the way of it for 90% of teams.  I'd be thrilled with that.  We get extended periods of mediocrity and then rebuilding.  That is not enough.

I admitted in the post that the Wolves got caught breaking the rules.  I'm taking issue with your term "massive failure."  To me, massive failure is being consistent losers (see Clippers, Hawks, Golden State).  Since McHale took over, they are 523-511.  No they have not set the world on fire, but they haven't been consistently Clipper-like either.  They had a run, it was over, and now we are rebuilding, just like it said in your post.  Sacramento made it to one WCF, just like we did.  We had an extended period of solid teams, not mediocrity.  I suppose it's the old glass half full - half empty argument.  "Massive failure" is a massive exaggeration.

I know you have to give credit to Mchale for drafting Kevin Garnett, but don't you think that the Clippers would have been consistently better if they had Garnett on their team for over a decade?

    Are you serious?

O.K., I pointed out multiples in a previous post, i.e., where you said KG's contract didn't hurt us or something, but in your original post you said it did.

Your either fishing for reactions or drunk.  I'm done discussing this sh*t with you.

Really, than exactly what did you mean by this....

Are you saying KG's contract is so unique that no other team has worked around it?  That would be funny cuz Boston just won a championship by surrounding KG with 2 players that have monster contracts.  LA made it to the Finals with Kobe's contract.  The Spurs have two huge contracts.

I was refering to GOOD as being compared to the wolves. The wolves r a complete mess. Why r we building around 2 young pf's? Memphis isnt a good team yet, but they sure have a nice young nucleus that could turn out to be a dominate force in the nba. Memphis drafts by position, conley, mayo, ***, warrick. They've filled their holes in the off-season, something the wolves failed to adress. I like what memphis is doing over their. Ok mr. hannible, plz explain to me how the wolves r in better rebuilding mode than the grizzlies. Im looking forward to ur answer.

McHale is kind of like a little kid. He use to make messes & not clean them up. Now that he is learning, he is beginning to clean up his messes. We are so use to him making messes & not cleaning them up. It is really nice to see that he is learning from his mistakes.

When your room was a complete mess when you were a kid, did you get praise for cleaning it up.  Maybe some, but ultimately you made it.  Yes, things look better, financially.  From a on-court success standpoint, no one can say for certain.  He, at one point, had a team go to the Western Conference finals.  When they get back, I'll say the mess is completely cleaned up.

The wolves are on the right track for the first time since KG got his extension.

McHale may have screwed up the franchise, but with the other guys making decisions as well around him,  the future finally looks bright again.
